Early Years
Responsible, Caring, Fearless & Secure
'Enter a work filled with fun and learning which allows each child to
open their imagination and explore new adventures.'
At Roehampton Church Forest School we offer a rich curriculum of awe and wonder. We work hard to provide a stimulating environment that provides exciting learning opportunities, promoting risk, challenge, exploration, adventure and a real love for learning.
We understand that play is an integral part of learning and this is at the heart of our Early Years Curriculum. We believe that the correct mix of adult-directed and child-initiated play ensures the best outcomes for pupils. At Roehampton Church Forest School we believe that warm and positive relationships between staff and children, consistent routines and strong relationships with parents and carers are key.
Children in our Early Years unit will learn skills, acquire new knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.
There are three prime areas which are important for children to develop well before anything else. Without a sound foundation in these three areas, it will be very hard for children to access other areas of learning.
The three prime areas of learning are:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
As children develop in the prime areas they will engage in learning linked to the four specific areas.
The four specific areas of learning are:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
The teachers use the children's interests and themed topics to plan engaging learning opportunities and activities around all the areas of development, ensuring that the activities provided are suited to each child's unique needs.
