Eco Council

Responsible, Caring, Fearless & Secure

At Roehampton Church Forest School, care for the environment is not an initiative — it is a deeply held responsibility, rooted in our Christian vision and lived out through the actions of our children every day.

Our Eco Council embodies this commitment.

Inspired by our belief in stewardship of God’s creation, our pupils understand that the world around them is something to be protected, cherished, and sustained for future generations. Through our unique Forest School provision, children develop a profound connection with nature - learning not only to observe and appreciate it, but to take responsibility for it.

Our Eco Council is at the heart of this work.

Made up of passionate and dedicated pupils, the council meets regularly to explore ideas, lead initiatives, and inspire change. They are driven by a genuine desire to make a difference, not just within our school, but across the wider community.

But what makes our Eco Council truly exceptional is the authenticity of their commitment.

They do not simply learn about environmental issues, they act on them.

Through hands-on experiences in our Putney Heath woodland setting, pupils gain a deep understanding of the natural world. They notice change, reflect on impact, and consider how their actions affect the environment. This lived experience gives real meaning to their work and empowers them to become thoughtful, informed advocates for sustainability.

Their influence can be seen throughout our school.

They encourage sustainable habits, promote environmental awareness, and lead by example - showing that small, thoughtful actions can lead to meaningful change. Whether caring for natural spaces, reducing waste, or engaging others in environmental responsibility, our pupils understand that everyone has a role to play.

Importantly, their work reflects a wider sense of justice and responsibility.

Our children recognise that caring for the environment is part of caring for one another. They understand that environmental issues affect communities locally and globally, and they are motivated by a strong sense of fairness, compassion, and moral purpose.

This is learning that goes far beyond the classroom.

Our Eco Council nurtures curiosity, responsibility, and hope. It empowers pupils to believe that their actions matter — that they can protect, preserve, and positively shape the world around them.

At Roehampton, we do not simply teach children about the environment.

We inspire them to care for it, respect it, and protect it - now and for the future.

Impact in Action

Our Eco Council makes a real and lasting difference:

  • Protecting Our Environment: Pupils lead initiatives such as litter picking, caring for green spaces, and promoting sustainability across the school.
  • Learning Through Nature: Forest School experiences deepen pupils’ understanding of the natural world and inspire meaningful environmental action.
  • Raising Awareness: Councillors encourage others to make environmentally responsible choices, both in school and at home.
  • Small Actions, Big Impact: From planting and growing to reducing waste, pupils demonstrate how everyday actions contribute to a healthier planet.
  • Extending to the Community: Eco initiatives reach beyond the school gates, encouraging families and the wider community to take part in caring for the environment.
