Year 3

Responsible, Caring & Secure

A very warm welcome to Year 3! This year is an important academic milestone as it marks the first year in Key Stage 2. There is lots of fun and exciting learning to do this year and I look forward to supporting your child on their journey as we work our way through the year. Below are a few helpful reminders to make this year as successful as possible:

P.E: P.E. lessons will be on Mondays and Fridays.  Full PE kit must be worn to school on these days.

Homework: Each week, your child will receive spellings and times tables on a Thursday which will need to be completed by Tuesday. We will also be working with these spellings throughout the week. Additional homework may also be set as the year progresses and where a child may benefit from further consolidation of their learning. If an additional homework task has been set, it will be sent out on a Thursday with your child’s usual homework.

Spellings: Spellings will be handed out on a Thursday and tested on a Tuesday. Spellings will include a combination of the Year 3 common exception words and words containing key spelling patterns as set out in the Year 3 curriculum.  They may also be set keywords from the current topic being studied. Spellings will also be practised during the week leading up to them being sent home.

Times tables: Children in Year 3 need to know their 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables - in order and at random as well as the inverse (division) facts. E.g. 15 ÷ 5 = 3.  Please practise these regularly at home with your child. Your child will be tested on 10 number sentences, from a particular multiplication family in random order, weekly.

Reading: Please listen your child read daily or as often a possible throughout the week.  A comment should be written in your child’s reading record at least once a week.  Your child’s reading record and book should be brought into school every day and will be changed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Thank you for your ongoing support.  Should you have any other questions or concerns, or simply wish to discuss your child’s learning, please make an appointment to see me through the office staff.

Kind regards,

Miss Jelley
