In September 2013, the Government decided to provide additional funding to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding, which is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, is allocated to primary school headteachers and is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools.

The PE and Sport Premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of PE and sports activities they offer their pupils.
