Year 2

Responsible, Caring & Secure

A very warm welcome to Year 2! This year is an important academic milestone as it marks the end of Key Stage 1 and the transition into Key Stage 2.  There is lots of fun and exciting learning to do this year and I look forward to supporting your child on their journey through Year 2.

Below are a few helpful reminders to make this year as successful as possible:

P.E.

P.E. lessons will be on Thursdays and Fridays.  P.E. kits must include suitable footwear (plain black trainers or plimsolls), a school red P.E. t-shirt, and black shorts or plain dark-coloured tracksuit bottoms (in the winter). Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school each week.

Homework

Each week on Friday your child will receive spellings, handwriting, maths and SPaG. These will need to be practised, completed and returned by Tuesday the following week. Additional homework may be set as the year progresses and where your child may benefit from further consolidation of their learning. If an additional homework task has been set, it will be sent out on a Friday with your child’s homework.

Spellings:

Spellings will be handed out on a Friday and tested on the following Wednesday. Spellings will include a combination of Year 1 and 2 common exception words and words relating to a key phonic sound being practised in class. They may also be set keywords from the current topic being studied.

Times Tables

Children in Year 2 need to know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables by the end of the academic year. Please practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables regularly at home.

Reading

Please listen to your child read daily or as often as possible throughout the week. A comment should be written in your child’s reading record at least once a week. Your child’s reading record and book should be brought into school every day and will be changed on Friday.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Should you have any other questions or concerns, or simply wish to discuss your child’s learning, please make an appointment to see me through the office staff.

Kind regards,

Mrs Jennings
